a sporting weekend
This past Saturday I played Ultimate frisbee. I guess it had been a few years since the last time I got roped into playing fetch, and it was sounding kind of fresh and fun instead of like a game only your dog is dumb enough to get tricked into.
Anyway, the warm-up was fine, even fun, and I sort of started to get into it. It was such a beautiful day, only a little windy, and it was starting to seem worth the 1.5 hour drive all the way from Yonago to Tottori City. But then we picked teams, and the game started, and the yelling about “stack” “force left” started and I was lost. Somebody advised that circling with a healthy convection current in mind was a good way to cover the field and stay open for receiving a catch. So I ran in circles, but I don’t think I understood the spirit of the advice because all I got was dizzy and nobody threw to me. I only touched the frisbee once in two games.
So basically it was business as usual in the field sports portion of Enjoying Spring. I was so jealous of the people sailing their little Lasers and wind surfboards on the lake next to our field, it seemed like a much better way to do hommage to the weather. I did, however, enjoy the running around, and more pointedly the fact that I could run for quite awhile without getting tired or getting a twinge in my ankle. I must be in considerably better shape than I was this time last year.
There’s a frisbee tournament in another month, and the rules dictate two girls per team on the field during all games, so I’m being recruited to fulfill the affirmative action quota. I don’t know yet. The truth is, chaotic sports have always confused me and I pretty much suck at them, and I don’t feel very useful or intelligent or actually clued-in at all when I’m out there running in circles. I probably should be embarrassed, that I was confused by a dog sport, but really I’d just rather play kickball.
